Sandy Berger stole classified documents from the National Archives. It was just a mistake, he said. Oh well, Okey dokey.
Lewis Libby, on the other hand, presents a grave danger to our Constitution, our Republic, our very lives! Just ask Patrick Fitzgerald. I mean there's a cloud. Oh, wait, the cloud is over Vice President Dick Cheney.
"There's a cloud over the vice president," Mr. Fitzgerald told the jury. "We didn't put that cloud there. That cloud's there because the defendant obstructed justice. That cloud is something you just can't pretend isn't there."
Oh Lordy, and besides all that, Libby was angry:
Mr. Fitzgerald said it was evident that Mr. Libby was angry at Ms. Plame's husband, Joseph Wilson IV, who had claimed in an op-ed piece and a television appearance that Mr. Bush lied by claiming in his 2003 State of the Union address that Iraq sought nuclear materials in Africa.
Throw the book at him. Compared to the evil things Lewis did (or did not do), Berger's "crime" was trivial, just ask his lawyer Lanny Breuer:
"It never ceases to amaze me how the most trivial things can be politicized. It is the height of unfairness . . . for this poor guy, who clearly made a mistake," Breuer said.
Tom Bevan is sympathetic:
Poor Sandy Berger. He had to pay a $50,000 fine and pick up some garbage on the side of the road in Virginia. Meanwhile, Scooter Libby had to face trial and might go to jail for, at worst, telling "a dumb lie" (to use the words of prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald) about a non-crime.
Rick Moran is happy we've got our priorities right.
The good bad news is, Berger will get his national security clearance back just in time for President Hillary. Those FBI files sure come in handy.
If he gets anywhere near The WHite House duing The Pantsuit's administration, look around. You will BE IN HELL.

I'm sure you know that better than most. A Clinton administration will be hell enough for me.

The prison seecnnte was excessive, but he did not deserve to have his "good" name back. Bush made the right call by commuting and not pardoning.References :
