Obama was able to buy the presidency by breaking his word on accepting public financing. Naturally he got a pass on this from his supporters in the media. Had John McCain reneged on his pledge to accept public financing we would not have heard the end of it. Of this there is NO DOUBT.
If John McCain had said his policies would bankrupt the coal industry, the press would have had a field day. His words would not have been buried. If John McCain had said his plan would cause electricity rates to "skyrocket", it would have been front page news for weeks. Peggy would be outraged.
If John McCain had hidden $800,000 in payments to a friendly "non partisan" organization the media would have pursued the story non-stop.
If John McCain's campaign had rigged his online credit card system to allow fraudulent donations, the press would have gone ballistic.
If John McCain had sat in a church for twenty years listening to an America-hating preacher shouting God Damn America, we would never have heard the end of it.
If John McCain had been palling around with the likes of slum-lord Tony Rezko, unrepentant terrorist William Ayers, and Israel bashing Rashid Khalidi, the media would have hounded him relentlessly. Front page news, above the fold.
If ACORN was committing voter fraud in the name of John McCain, if McCain supporters - and campaign staffers - were voting illegally in swing states, the press would declare McCain was attempting to steal the election.
Steven Den Beste:
Undeniable. But we are stuck with their candidate.
Many on the right are congratulating Obama, (in a way I wish I could do the same, but it would be dishonest):
One of the last things Dean Barnett said to me was that, as best he could tell, Barack Obama is “a good guy and a decent man.” I don’t think he’d mind me telling you that, especially under the circumstances. It’s a testament to his generosity of spirit that even in the heat of a campaign, with every reason to think the worst of his opponent, Dean couldn’t help but give him the benefit of the doubt. That’s Barnett all over, and that’s what made him an indispensable man whom we’ve been forced, horrendously, to dispense with.
...congratulations to Barry O on a race superbly run and to our country for not having let the wrong reasons deter it from making the wrong choice.
As much as I admired Dean Barnett, I agree with Glynn's response:
I am truly sorry, Allah, but I don’t agree with you or Barnett. I simply cannot call someone who would let a baby die in a soiled linen closet a “good man.” I can’t call someone who would see saving that child a “burden on the mother.” I cannot see someone who has consitently told a string of lies a good man. I cannot call someone who attended a racist antisemitic anti-American church for over 20 years, all the while naming the pastor as his spiritual mentor, a good man. No. Not ever.
As for his "superbly run" campaign. I guess it depends on the meaning of the word "superb". According to Dictionary.com:
I don't see a damn thing admirable about it. Republicans who want to take the high road today can have at it. I will not. I agree completely with grdred944: This election was a disgrace for our country.
I will look forward. But I will not forget, or ignore, the most blatantly dishonest - and fraudulent - campaign I have ever witnessed.
I still feel if any other candidate has his record (or lack of), he would have lost every state.

No doubt. No one else with his record (or lack of) would ever have been nominated in the first place.
How on earth did he get elected? Too many Americans think like a bunch of four year olds! I heard that somewhere???
It's the only explanation.

But history was made and apparently that's all that matters.

Afraid so. This comment at The Anchoress reflects my feelings as well:
Awakened at 5 a.m. to the news that we were in the hands of rank amateurs starting on 1/20/09 and remembered to be grateful indeed that God granted us George W. Bush for 8 years, with all his steadfast courage and dignity.
