Yes, if John McCain and Dianne Feinstein have anything to say about it. Last week, Senator (and Presidential candidate) John McCain (R?-AZ) said he would close Guantanamo Bay and move the terrorists detainees to somewhere like Ft. Leavenworth in Texas Kansas. Yesterday Senator Feinstein (D-CA) introduced a measure calling for the closure of Gitmo and moving the terrorists detainees to the United States or to their home country. If any of them pose no danger her measure would just let them go. From the LA Times:
Feinstein's measure would transfer Guantanamo detainees to military or civilian detention facilities in the United States or to their home countries. The legislation allows detainees who "pose no continuing security threat" to be released. Feinstein said she opposed "releasing any terrorists."
It's important to add Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates has called for the closing of Guantanamo as well:
Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates said this year that he had sought to close Guantanamo when he took the helm of the Pentagon in December. Like Feinstein, Gates has said he fears that trials at Guantanamo lack credibility.
Gates canceled a $102-million project to build a Guantanamo courthouse. But administration lawyers' concerns prevented Gates from closing the prison or moving trials to the United States.
If there are problems, Gates needs to address them. There's no reason the United States can't run credible trials at Gitmo. Who in their right mind wants a bunch of terrorists in the United States? I'm sure there are plenty here already.
One bit of good news from the article:
The senator's (Feinstein) proposal comes on the day the justices decline to hear detainees' appeal on the legality of military trials there.
[...]
In Monday's Supreme Court action, three justices — David H. Souter, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Stephen G. Breyer — voted to hear the case of the two Guantanamo Bay detainees challenging their confinement. Court rules require four votes to hear a case.
(((((whisper: Ft. Leavenworth is in Kansas.)))))
