The latest FairTax Rally was in Columbia, South Carolina on May 15th. The rally was timed to coincide with the Republican presidential debate being held less than 200 feet away at the Koger Center. Neal Boortz estimates there were between 8,500 and 9,000 people at the rally, a pretty sizable number. The FairTax seems to be gaining popularity and it was good to see presidential candidates Duncan Hunter, Mike Huckabee, and Tom Tancredo at the rally. The top three candidates - Giuliani, McCain, and Romney - don't seem too interested in the FairTax and that's unfortunate. It's the best tax plan out there, by far.
The Fair Tax Act of 2007 (H.R. 25) sponsored by Rep. John Linder now has 60 cosponsors, including Hunter and Tancredo. The companion bill in the Senate (S.1025)sponsored by Senator Saxby Chambliss has 4 cosponsors. Now seems like a good time for supporters of the FairTax to contact Congress and push the legislation.
Our current tax code is beyond repair. The burden placed on individuals and businesses, especially small businesses, is outrageous and should not be tolerated by a free society. Why Americans continue to roll over and take it, I don't know. I guess it's because we feel helpless to do anything about it and to a degree we are. We depend on our elected representatives to cast votes that are in our best interests but too often that's just not the case. Congress has allowed the tax code to get so out of control nobody understands it, including IRS employees and no doubt the majority in Congress.
The Flat Tax is not a better alternative. It does not get rid of the IRS, it does not eliminate the time and expense employers must spend to collect income and payroll tax for the IRS, it does not get rid of the payroll tax, it does not eliminate the corporate income tax (which is not paid by the corporation, it is included in the price we pay for goods and services), it does not get rid of the dreaded April 15th filing deadline or IRS audits, and it does not force individuals and businesses engaged in illegal activity (prostitutes, drug dealers, gamblers) or illegal aliens to pay their fair share of tax.
For those not familiar with the FairTax, the website linked above is a great resource. Also, Brian at Flashpoint posted an introduction that is informative as well. Neal Boortz and John Linder make a seemingly dull subject entertaining in The FairTax Book. It's a must read.
Every taxpayer in America should support the FairTax. We need to let our representatives know that the status quo is no longer acceptable.
